Applicants whose English language proficiency is below Trent’s accepted scores are invited to apply for gradual admission through the Trent-ESL: English for University Program. 

The Trent-ESL: English for University program is an intensive English language, academic skills and university transition program that provides a strong foundation for academic success at the university level, and immediate progression to full-time undergraduate degree studies upon successful completion of the program.

Combine ESL + Credit Study – Trent is the only ESL program in Canada where students can earn up to three full credits towards their undergraduate degree while studying ESL

  • Conditional admission pathway to Trent University
  • Top two levels of ESL – Academic English 1 and Academic English 2 – are now each worth one full credit towards your degree at Trent
  • 18-24 hours English for University + credit course study each week
  • Students are allowed to take up to two, half-credit courses in the top two ESL levels
  • Small, dedicated classes
  • Academic support from start to finish

For direct admission to ESL Level 3:

  • IELTS: 5.0 overall, with a 5.0 in writing
  • TOEFL IBT: 60
  • TOEFL PBT: 500
  • CAEL 37.5 - 45

For direct admission to Academic English 1 worth one full undergraduate credit:

  • IELTS: 5.5 overall, with a 5.5 in writing
  • TOEFL IBT: 70
  • TOEFL PBT: 525
  • CAEL 47.5 - 52.5

For direct admission to Academic English 2 worth one full undergraduate credit:

  • IELTS: 6.0 overall, with a 6.0 in writing
  • TOEFL IBT: 80
  • TOEFL PBT: 550
  • CAEL 55 - 59

Start studying English in September, January, April, and June (4 intakes!).


Academic background and requirement

  • Honours degree (a four year undergraduate bachelor's degree) with at least B+ (77%) in the last two years of full-time study, or last ten full academic credits
  • Appropriate previous education and training, plus feasible proposed course of study and research project
